Lata Mangeshkar, born in 1929 in Madhya Pradesh was
the firstborn of a Marathi and Konkani musician and his wife Shevanti. She has
contributed to Indian music for more than nine decades and earned her title as
The Nightingale of India in her ninety-three years of life and is one of the most famous singers and music composers in the history of India. Her majestic voice
has given her endless opportunities to work with various artists and in various
languages. Lata Mangeshkar has recorded her songs in almost every language in
India – even the world!
Being a child of different cultural backgrounds like Marathi, Konkani, Gujarati, etc, she was well-versed with the cultural significance, and language which later helped her as a singer. All her siblings are accomplished singers and musicians. She received her initial training in singing and acting in public through her father’s plays, called Sangeet Natak in Marathi. The owner of Navyug Chitrapat Movie Company who was a close friend of their family took care of her family and helped her in her singing and acting career since the year her father died when she turned 13. He died of heart disease. As years passed, she moved to Bombay (present-day Mumbai) and gradually established her career as an actor and singer. She took hold of every opportunity that came her way and attended music classes everywhere she went. She died today, 6th February 2022. India has lost a gem in the ocean of memories. In the words of Lata in her song,
“Aadmi musafir hai
Aata hai jaata hai
Aate jate raste me
Yaade chod jaata hai”

we are all just travelers on earth. and she has completed her journey.
She was honoured with India’s highest civilian award, the prestigious
Bharat Ratna in 2001 among the other famous awards. In 1969 she was awarded the Padma Bhushan, the Padma Vibhushan in
1999, Zee Cine Awards for Lifetime Achievements 1999. Dadasaheb Phalke award in
1989, Maharashtra Bhushan award in 1997, NTR National Award (1999), ANR
National Award (2009), three National Film Awards and 15 Bengal Film
Journalists' Association Awards. She has also won four Filmfare Best Female
Playback Awards. She was later awarded Filmfare Special Awards in 1994 and 2004.
The highest civilian and military order of merit of France, the Legion of
Honour (2007) has been conferred upon her too.

more than 25,000
solo, duet and chorus backed songs in about 20 Indian
languages between 1948 and 1974 and sung no fewer
than 30,000 songs between 1948 and 1987. The Guinness Book
of Records has stated that Lata Mangeshkar is the most
recorded artist in history. Her record was contested by
Mohammad Rafi, who was claimed to have sung around 28,000 songs. After Rafi's death, in its 1984 edition, the Guinness Book of World Records
stated Lata Mangeshkar's name for the "Most Recordings", but also
